Philosphy
We consider Montessori as both a philosophy of child development and a rationale for guiding such growth. It is based upon the child’s developmental needs for freedom within limits and a prepared environment that exposes children to materials and experiences which develop intelligence as well as physical and psychological abilities. Montessori is designed to take full advantage of the self motivation and unique ability of young children to develop their own capabilities.
Montessori begins with a deep respect for children as unique individuals and works from a concern for their social and emotional development. Because children progress at various rates of development, they work at their level of competency with the materials and move ahead at their own point of readiness, rather than chronological age.
Montessori students learn through hands-on experiences and exploration, becoming actively involved in their learning, rather than waiting to be taught. One comment we often hear about Montessori graduates is that they arrive in the classroom ready to learn. A Montessori beginning helps to develop self discipline and an internal sense of purpose and motivation – values that will serve children well wherever they go.
